Travel Guide Perth:
Perth, a stunning city, is the capital of Western Australia. It is located on the South-Western coast of Australia. The city covers an area of 6,417.9 km2. It is situated along the Swan River. Perth is surrounded by the Indian Ocean to its West and the Darling Scarp to its East. The total population of this city is 2.3 million. This makes it the fourth most populous city of Australia.
Perth was once the home of Aboriginal Victorians. They lived here for at least 45,000 years. The Whadjuk Noongar tribe was the custodian of this land. The city was officially founded as the capital of The Swan River Colony in 1829, by Captain James Stirling. It was named after the Perth City of Scotland. Queen Victoria gave the status of a city to Perth in 1856.
Today, Perth is famous worldwide as the main center of mining and energy industries in Australia. It is one of Australia’s sunniest cities, with clear skies 70% of the year. That enviable climate of the city attracts a lot of visitors throughout the year. This city is also among Australia’s top 15 most liveable cities. Perth is the 6th safest city of Australia, with a safety score of 57.5. It stands at the 23rd place on the global economic city index. Perth is also a hub of research and innovation, particularly in the field of technology and environmental sciences.
Each year, millions of tourists visit Perth to explore its white sandy beaches and the beautiful botanical gardens and parks. Quick Pro Tips for Visiting Perth:
I have been living in Perth for many years. And based on my personal experience, I will share some pro tips with you. These tips are going to help you alot while you are visiting here.
Best Time to Visit:
You can visit Perth anytime you want to round the year. But as per my experience, I recommend you to avoid visiting here in the peak summer months (December to February). It is because in these months, the temperatures can go above 40°C (104°F). So the heat can be very intense. And you will not be able to enjoy the city to the fullest.
Instead, the best time I recommend you to visit is during spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). During these seasons, the weather is not that hot. It is pleasantly warm. The skies are clear and evenings are cooler. And all of these things make Spring and Autumn perfect for outdoor activities. The parks and botanical gardens of Perth are in their full bloom during spring. This thing enhances its beauty, making it more attractive for the visitors. Visit in these seasons. And you will love it.
SmartRider Card:
Perth’s SmartRider Card is a real lifesaver. It is a very necessary tool for getting around the city with ease. I have been using it for years. And it has benefited me alot. You can use the SmartRider card on all types of public transport services. These services include buses, trains, and ferries. You simply will have to tap it on and off. And you will be good to go.
The SmartRider card is a very convenient and affordable option to navigate around the city. It also offers discounted fares, easy top-ups, and the ability to track your travel history. So I recommend you to pick a SmartRider Card as soon as you step here. And you will never regret it. Trust me!.
Dress Code:
Perth is a city with a diverse population. More than 45% of its residents are foreigners. So the city does not have any special or specific dress code. It is open to all styles and fashions. I have been living here for a long time. And I’ve never encountered any issues with my clothes.
I recommend you to wear casual clothes in public places and beach wear in coastal areas like Cottesloe and Scarborough Beach. You should avoid going shirtless in public places so that you may not look weird. And besides that, you can wear what makes you comfortable. And you’ll fit right in.
Cashless Payments:
Perth is a very modern city. So nearly everyone at shops and in the malls accepts card and contactless payments. That thing makes the transactions more quick and easy. Over all these years of experience, I have rarely found some local shops that may ask for cash. And besides that, the cashless payments and cards are accepted almost everywhere, from restaurants to markets.
So I recommend you to carry a small amount of cash for smaller shops or local markets. They may not accept cards or cashless payments. And keep the rest in your cards. And you will be good to go.
Peaceful Streets:
Perth is one of the safest cities in the world. It ranks as the 6th safest city of Australia. Perth is also the highest rated city for travelers, with a satisfaction rate of 96%. I have been living here for many years. And I have always felt secure while walking through the streets at any time of the day or night. So you can visit here without worrying for a single second.
Perth’s streets are safe and clean. They are well-maintained. The people of the city are welcoming and helpful to the tourists. The Public transport of the city is very convenient and safe. So you can easily explore the city with comfort and confidence. But, I always recommend you to stay aware of your surroundings. You should be more careful especially when you are traveling solo. Call (000) in case you need police, ambulance or firefighters. And you will be fine.
Nature and Wildlife:
Perth is very famous for its stunning natural landscapes, beautiful gardens, parks and unique wildlife. I highly recommend you to visit Kings Park, the Perth Zoo and Caversham Wildlife Park. These places will give you an incredible glimpse into the Western Australia’s amazing biodiversity.
But I recommend you to be respectful to the local flora and fauna. The people of Perth are very friendly. But do not tolerate anyone disrespecting their surroundings, parks and wildlife. So you should respect their values. Don’t pluck the flowers. Must follow the rules and regulations while you are in a park or a zoo. And enjoy the views to the fullest.
Airport Transfer:
You can go for different options like bus, taxi or Uber while going from the airport to the city. But I strongly recommend you to go for the airport shuttle bus service. It will smoothly transfer you from the Perth Airport to the city center. The Perth Airport Connect Shuttle is literally a far better option. It is because it enables you to go to the various parts of the city with ease. It is also a very quick, convenient and affordable option.
The shuttle bus will take you to the city center in around 25 minutes. But you cannot use your SmartRider card on the shuttle bus service. You will have to pay your fare directly to the bus operator. And it is usually in cash. So keep some cash with you. Pay the fare. And be ready to start a journey full of excitement and joy.
Free WiFi:
And one of the best things I adore after living in Perth for years is the abundance of free WiFis. I have been living here for years, and I never had any connectivity problems. You will find free WiFi in nearly all public places. Whether you’re at a cafe, shopping mall, or even at the beach, you need not to worry about connectivity issues. This is a huge plus point for visitors.
So as soon as you arrive at the Perth airport, just on your WiFi. And you will be in touch with your family and friends 24/7. Now, you can roam around the city. You can visit any place you want to. And you will be staying connected without worrying about finding a hotspot or anything like that. Share unforgettable moments with your loved ones. And boost up your enjoying experience to the next level.
Getting to Perth:
You can enter the mesmerizing city of Perth by taking a flight, boarding a cruise ship, train and by bus.
By Flight:
I highly recommend you to take a flight to Perth if you are traveling from another country or from the Eastern states of Australia. It is because flying is the most convenient and easy way to reach here. Perth Airport is the main entrance to the city. It is located only 17 kilometers from the city center. Many international airlines operate flights to Perth. These airlines include:

Some budget airlines also offer flights to the city. So if your budget is a bit low, then you can go for these budget airlines. I recommend you to go for these airlines if you are a domestic traveler. These airlines include:

When you reach the port, I recommend you to board a train. Tap on your SmartRider card on the train. And it will take you to the city in around 30 minutes. Be ready to explore the unbelievable then.
By Train:
If you are traveling from another city in Australia to Perth, then you can opt for the train option. Perth Railway Station is the main station of Perth. Different regional and intercity trains stop here. The Transperth operates long distance train services between Perth and other cities.
You can travel directly from some cities to Perth. While for others, you will have to change your train. For example, the Indian Pacific operates on a direct train route between Sydney and Perth. But the train service between Melbourne and Perth is not direct. And you will have to do multiple changes in the way. If you want to consider the train option, then you can find different train routes and buy their tickets.
Getting Around Perth:
One of the many reasons why I recommend travelers to visit Perth is its diverse, convenient and safe public transport systems. You can roam around Perth using different options like trains, buses, ferries and taxis. I recommend you to buy a SmartRider Card from the airport. This card will help you while you get on and off the public transport with ease. And it will save a good amount of money, time and energy.
SmartRider Card:
SmartRider Card is a literal blessing in Perth. You can use your SmartRider in different types of Public transport like trains, ferries and buses. And it will save you a nice amount of money. I got my SmartRider Card the first day I entered Perth. And it has saved me a lot of time, money and energy in all these years.
You can buy your SmartRider Card from Smart Carte on the ground floor of Terminal 1 International at Perth Airport. But you can not pay with your SmartRider Card to the Airport Shuttle Service. You can pay them in cash. And then, you can experience the real magic of your
SmartRider cards are not free. A standard SmartRider Card costs $20. In it, $10 is its price and $10 is for your fares. A concession SmartRider card costs $5. And a Carer, Aged, and Disability Support Pensioner SmartRider Card is Free. It also offers free rides in specific hours. But you will need to add a minimum of $5 in it. So that you can use it outside of your free travel hours. Students with a Student SmartRider card can travel for free in public transport.
The train network in Perth is extensive and diverse. The city trains network consists of seven Transperth suburban rail lines. These lines include:
These lines run across 79 stations. These stations are scattered over 181 kilometers, making it the third largest rail network in Australia. This train network covers nearly the whole city and the surrounding suburbs. So you can use the trains if you want to get around the city with ease.
The trains roaming the Perth city are handled by the Transperth. The main train station of the city is the Perth Railway Station. You will use your SmartRider card when you are boarding on these trains. Tap it on and off. And you will be good to go. Furthermore, you should follow the rules and regulations of the train stations:
You should have a valid ticket or SmartRider card
You should offer your seat to passengers with special needs, elders and pregnant women
Use headphones while listening to music
Don’t make noise
Put your rubbish in bins
Be aware of your surroundings
Wait behind the yellow line on the station
Do not smoke
Do not eat food or drinks in the train etc.
Buses in Perth are another good option for navigating around the city. Most of these buses are operated by Transperth. There are over 1500 buses in the fleet of Transperth. These buses navigate around 281 standard routes, 270 school bus routes and nine Central Area Transit routes.
The CAT route operates in the central business district. And it is a free fare route. So if you are navigating around the CBD, I recommend you to go for the CAT route buses. And roam around for free. If you are planning to visit the inner suburbs of Perth, then I recommend you to go for the CircleRoute. These routes have buses every 5-15 minutes on weekends while every 15 minutes on normal days. You can find these buses’ schedules and their routes, from Google Maps or the Transperth website.
You will use your SmartRider card on most of these buses. But not on all of them. For instance, Airport Shuttle Service is the best option for airport transfer. But you can’t use your SmartRider card on it. For more information about the bus route and their tickets, download the Transperth Journey Planner app (iOS) / (Android).
And I recommend that you must go for a ferry ride while you are visiting Perth. Ferry is a more scenic and exciting way to explore the city. I always go for these ferries when enjoying a day out in South Perth. And they give unbelievable adrenaline boosts each time. I recommend you must hop on one of these ferries which operates on the Swan River. And you will never forget the vibes it delivers.
You should explore the main ferry route. This route operates between the city center (Elizabeth Quay), South Perth and the Perth Zoo. You should also explore the Rottnest Island ferries route. The ferry terminals of Fremantle are also breathtaking. Explore them and you will love the views. Trust me these ferry rides offer mesmerizing views of the city skyline, the lush green landscapes and the river.
Ferries are a more relaxing and enjoyable way to travel here. You can use your SmartRider card on these ferries. Just tap it on and off while getting on and off the ferries. And that’s enough.
Taxis/Uber:
Taxis are easily available everywhere in Perth. You can find them with ease in malls, markets or streets. The cars are safe and clean. They are well maintained and new. The drivers are nice and friendly. But I recommend you not to go for taxis while roaming around Perth. But if you want to go for a car by hook or by crook, then I recommend you to select an Uber.
Uber is more affordable and comfortable than local taxis. The Ubers are new, clean and safer. The drivers are well mannered and well trained. They accept cashless payments, credit cards and debit cards too. You can use the Uber app (iOS) and (Android) to book a ride. Use an Uber. And explore the alluring beauty of the Perth city in a car.

And explore any historic site nearby. Move on fast and spend your afternoon visiting the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Next, I recommend you take a stroll through the streets of Northbridge. You will love the vibrant atmosphere there. Must watch the sunset at Cottesloe Beach. End your day with a great dinner at one of the restaurants in Fremantle. And you have explored enough of Perth.
If you have two days, then I urge you to add a visit to Rottnest Island in the morning. Enjoy cycling around the island and meeting the famous quokkas. Then run towards the mainland in the afternoon. And explore the Fremantle Markets. Next, move on to your dinner in the lively atmosphere of South Terrace in Fremantle. And that’s all you can have in two days.
For a three-day trip (the one I personally recommend the most), I recommend you spend two full days in Perth City as per the above suggestions. For your third day, make a trip to the Swan Valley. Next, move on to the Perth Hills. And enjoy some of the finest local produce and wines there. Then visit the Serpentine Falls, and you will be done with nearly all the eye-catching iconic views of the city.
If you have four or more days in your hands, then I recommend you to explore more of Perth’s surrounding areas. You should visit the Pinnacles Desert for a unique and interesting experience. You should also take a day trip to Margaret River. The river is famous for its renowned wineries and stunning beaches. I urge you to spend a day at the Wave Rock for some incredible natural wonders. And you will never forget the views. For further details, explore my upcoming detailed guide on how to plan your perfect Perth journey and enjoy.
